The world's information is just a fingertip away from the screen. Ever wonder why these young people are glued to their phone screens? Well, it is because of games, videos, music, animation, and so much more, as a result of the fourth industrial revolution, that young people finally have a voice to tell their stories, show their creativity, problem-solving skills, and their creative skills as well as critical thinking while sharing information on their screens. AmphiArts is an education-oriented arts education space that connects young people with their creative identities and opportunities available in the creative world. AmphiArts BeCreative South Africa wants to work for schools, art centers, and libraries. AmphiArts was established in response to the problems faced by young potential creatives who do not have access to computers, their history, and the infrastructure in their communities. In many schools, computer skills, speech, drama, and practical skills are not an option while there is little priority for creativity in general. We want to provide a space where young people can engage with arts, where they can explore those parts of themselves that can not be understood through words, and develop critical and alternative ways of thinking and expressing. The opportunity to be part of our programs provides another pathway for young people who are talented and need guidance.
The challenges and problems that learners will face in their lives, individually and collectively, are huge. The skills that they will use to solve them don’t come from a book and can’t be copied from a chalkboard, they are skills that come from creatively solving problems, having the confidence to take apart big ideas, and the moxie and tools to advocate for their ideas and make them happen. Today with access to all the world’s information a keyboard away, young people must learn to think and learn how to learn.
